Emma Rous Books in Order

Emma Rous was born in England, but much of her childhood was spent elsewhere. Her family lived in Indonesia, Kuwait, Portugal, and Fiji before she returned to the UK as a teenager to finish school in Colchester, Essex. Moving between countries gave her an early sense of how places can shape a person.

She wanted two things from a young age: to write stories and to work with animals.

Rous chose veterinary medicine first. She spent six years at the University of Cambridge studying veterinary medicine, alongside a zoology degree. During that time, she also had opportunities to study orangutans in Borneo and hoofed mammals in South Africa, experiences that fit neatly with her lifelong interest in animals and the natural world.

After graduating in 1997, she worked as a small-animal veterinary surgeon for more than eighteen years. It was a busy career, but the wish to write never really went away. In 2016, she took a career break and gave fiction the serious try she had long promised herself.

The change stuck.

A literary agent took on her first manuscript in 2017, and Rous's debut, The Au Pair, soon found readers in several countries. The novel begins with a troubling family photograph and follows Seraphine Mayes as she questions what happened on the day she and her twin brother were born. Set around a remote Norfolk estate, it mixes family history, shifting memories, and the unanswered disappearance of an au pair.

Her second novel, The Perfect Guests, returns to the kind of setting Rous clearly enjoys exploring: a large, isolated house carrying a difficult past. At Raven Hall, a woman is hired to play a role at a murder-mystery party, while an earlier storyline follows a teenage girl drawn into the life of the family who owns the estate. The book moves between time periods and lets old secrets slowly catch up with the present.

Across both novels, Rous is drawn to grand but uneasy homes, close family ties, hidden histories, and characters who discover that the version of the past they were given may not be the whole story. Her mysteries often put ordinary questions, such as who belongs in a family or whom to trust, under real pressure.

She now lives on the edge of the Fens in Cambridgeshire with her husband, their three sons, a rescue dog, and a cat. When she is not writing, she has said she enjoys kayaking, open-water swimming, and exploring the local countryside with her dog.
