Emma Christie Books in Order

Emma Christie grew up in Cumnock, a coal-mining town in Ayrshire, in a house packed with books. Reading was part of everyday life, and writing came early too. Long before publishing looked realistic, she was making up stories, writing songs, and finding reasons to spend time with words.

At Aberdeen University, she started in law and then switched to literature and medieval history. That change says a lot about the route she eventually took. She liked structure and argument, but she was just as interested in story, character, and the ways people explain themselves when things start to go wrong.

After university she spent five years at The Press and Journal, first in Aberdeen and later in Elgin, where she became chief reporter. She covered crime, courts and politics, and the job taught her to write cleanly. In newsroom terms, that meant cutting anything too flowery and getting to the point. That plain, sharp style is still there in her fiction.

She learned to write by being edited hard.

Journalism also gave her something even more useful for fiction, a close look at people under pressure. Christie has written about visiting bereaved families, sitting through court cases, and listening as ordinary lives suddenly unraveled. She loved interviewing artists and authors too, especially writers who had just landed their first book deals. Those conversations helped turn a private ambition into a plan she could no longer ignore.

In December 2009, when she was 29, Christie quit reporting and took a chance on a different life. She wanted to travel in Latin America, and she wanted to write a novel. A character called Ruth Morrison had been in her head for long enough that she finally listened. The book deal did not arrive quickly. There were rewrites, unpublished manuscripts, rejections, and plenty of waiting.

Ten years later, it finally did.

Her debut, The Silent Daughter, came out in 2020. It follows Edinburgh reporter Chris Morrison as he searches for his missing daughter while his wife lies in a coma, and it makes smart use of Christie's own background in newsrooms and investigations. The novel was shortlisted for major Scottish crime prizes and longlisted for the John Creasey Dagger. Find Her First followed in 2022, with another missing-person case, this time centered on a paramedic, his vanished wife, and secrets that stretch beyond Edinburgh.

Christie writes standalone thrillers, often rooted in Scotland, and readers tend to come for the mystery and stay for the emotional weight underneath it. Her books circle family strain, loyalty, grief, and the trouble caused by long-buried secrets. Outside fiction, she has also worked as a tour director in Europe and even helped catch bats on a research project in the Mexican jungle. Now she lives in Barcelona with her girlfriend Mari, and weekends often mean the Catalan coast, the mountains, and their campervan, Poncho.
