The Emma Caldridge books are international thrillers built around a very practical kind of hero. Emma is a biochemist and an ultramarathon runner, not a trained spy, yet her work and her ability to endure make her useful in the worst possible situations. She is smart, observant, and hard to stop once someone needs help.

The series begins with Running from the Devil, when Emma survives a plane crash near the Colombian and Venezuelan border and follows guerrillas who have taken other passengers hostage. From there, the stories keep moving across borders and into dangerous terrain. Emma faces a South African race and a pirate-threatened cruise ship in Running Dark, a cartel and a deadly toxin in The Ninth Day, and a Caribbean mystery with a scientific edge in Dead Asleep.

The danger is international, but Emma's responses stay hands-on.

Her recurring allies include Edward Banner, the head of the security firm Darkview, and Cameron Sumner, an operative whose work often overlaps with Emma's crises. Their presence gives the books an ongoing team dynamic, even though Emma is often isolated when the action starts. She has to rely on her scientific knowledge, endurance training, and quick reading of people before help can reach her.

Science is central to the series without turning the books into lectures. Biological threats, pharmaceuticals, toxins, and outbreaks create the stakes, while the plots focus on what happens when those things are controlled by criminals, militias, or people with money and power. The settings matter too, from jungles and deserts to ships and remote islands. Survival can depend on a route, a plant, a sample, or one useful piece of evidence.

They introduce risk analyst Sebastian Ryan and take Emma into Sunrise City, Utah, where a seemingly orderly community hides a dangerous cult. The shorter format makes this section especially quick, but it works best read in sequence.

Blood Run returns Emma to a full-length mission in West Africa, where missing smallpox vials turn a vaccine trip into a race through insurgent territory. Start with Running from the Devil for the clearest introduction to Emma, Darkview, and the series' mix of science, survival, and fast-moving suspense.
