Author bio
Jamie Freveletti grew up in Addison, Illinois, outside Chicago. Long before her novels sent characters across jungles, deserts, and political hot spots, she was a big reader with a soft spot for thrillers. At twelve, she had a poem chosen for a children's anthology, an early sign that writing was already part of the picture.
She chose law first. After law school, Freveletti moved to Geneva, Switzerland, to earn a diploma in International Studies. She went on to work as a trial attorney in Chicago, building a career that called for research, preparation, and a cool head under pressure.
Writing returned as a way to make room for creativity alongside a busy legal and family life. Freveletti took a night writing class at the University of Chicago while working as a lawyer and raising children. She completed a thriller, revised it after feedback from an agent, and joined a writers' group that helped her sharpen the manuscript.
She kept writing.
Her debut, Running from the Devil, was published in 2009. It introduced Emma Caldridge, a biochemist and ultramarathon runner whose scientific training and stubborn endurance are tested in international emergencies. The novel won the 2010 Thriller Award for Best First Novel and the Barry Award for Best Thriller.
Emma does not wait around to be rescued.
In Running Dark, The Ninth Day, Dead Asleep, and Blood Run, Freveletti sends Emma into threats involving pirates, cartels, toxic diseases, and missing smallpox samples. The books move fast, but their real engine is problem-solving. Emma has to notice what others miss, use the science she knows, and keep moving when every route looks bad.
That mix draws on Freveletti's own interests. She is a distance runner and holds a black belt in aikido. Her background in law and international studies also gives her stories a practical feel, with investigations, logistics, and competing agendas sitting alongside chase scenes and survival stakes.
In 2011, the Robert Ludlum estate selected Freveletti to write for the Covert-One series. Her two entries, The Janus Reprisal and The Geneva Strategy, follow a clandestine U.S. team confronting global threats. She has also contributed shorter work to anthologies, including Anatomy of Innocence: Testimonies of the Wrongfully Convicted.
Freveletti lives in Chicago with her family. Her fiction is a good fit for readers who like science-aware thrillers, capable women at the center of the action, and stories that keep the pressure on without losing sight of the people caught in the middle.
