Elizabeth Breck Books in Order

Elizabeth Breck is a native Californian whose early favorite was Harriet the Spy. That makes a tidy origin story for someone who grew up to be a licensed private investigator, though her route to fiction took a little longer. Her mysteries draw on the curiosity, persistence, and close attention to detail that come with investigative work.

Breck has worked mainly in insurance investigations. She has said that she began working as a private investigator in her twenties, and she once lived near the beach in a small La Jolla studio, details that later helped shape the world of her fictional detective, Madison Kelly.

Writing became a serious next step after Breck returned to school in 2013. At age 51, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Literature/Writing, summa cum laude, from the University of California San Diego.

It was a late start on paper, but not a small one.

Her first novel, Anonymous, introduces Madison Kelly, a San Diego private investigator who is between cases when a threatening note appears on her door. The story sends Madison toward a pair of cold disappearances linked to a true-crime podcast, and it puts the practical side of PI work, interviews, leads, and the question of whom to trust, at the center of the suspense.

Breck followed it with Double Take, another Madison Kelly case set around La Jolla and San Diego. This time, Madison is hired to find a missing journalist whose unfinished reporting may have uncovered something dangerous. The book was nominated for the Sue Grafton Memorial Award at the 2022 Edgar Awards, a fitting moment for an author whose own career has often been compared with the everyday working life of a private detective.

The beach is not just scenery in these books.

La Jolla's coffee shops, surf culture, oceanfront apartments, and bright Southern California weather give the Madison Kelly stories a lived-in setting, while the cases themselves stay dark and personal. Madison is independent and capable, but she is not removed from the risks of the work. Missing people, old secrets, uneasy relationships, and threats that turn toward the investigator are recurring parts of the series.

The first two Madison Kelly novels work as separate mysteries, though reading Anonymous before Double Take lets readers see Madison's work and personal life develop in order. Breck has also written a children's mystery adventure featuring Meg Minnehan, bringing her interest in observation and amateur sleuthing to younger readers. She continues to balance her work as an author with her background as a licensed California private investigator.
