Series background & context
Elementals is Michelle Madow’s modern take on Greek mythology, centered on a small New England town that turns out to be far more magical than it looks. The story follows Nicole Cassidy, who transfers to Kinsley High and learns on day one that some students attend a special homeroom for witches — including her.
Nicole discovers she is a witch descended from the Greek gods, something her family never told her. When the Olympian Comet passes overhead for the first time in three thousand years, she and four other teens are gifted with control over the elements. The comet has a darker effect as well, weakening the prison world that has held the Titans and letting ancient monsters slip back into the human realm.
Each book sends the Elementals on a new quest inspired by myth. They hunt for the blood of the Hydra, seek Medusa’s head at the edge of the world, and eventually venture through a portal into Kerberos, a hellish prison dimension designed to strip them of their powers and sanity. Along the way, Nicole wrestles with a rare and frightening extra ability — the power to kill with a touch — and a growing connection to Blake, the fire Elemental whose jealous ex is dabbling in dark magic.
The tone mixes high school dynamics with world‑spanning adventure. One chapter might take place in class or at a party, and the next drops the characters onto legendary islands or into battles with monsters pulled straight from old stories. The friendships among the five Elementals deepen as the stakes rise, and the series does not shy away from asking who they’re willing to sacrifice to save everyone else.
A short story, set on the night of the Olympian Comet, offers a sideways look at the same event from another witch’s perspective and can be read before, during, or after the main novels.
Across the series you’ll find clear, easy‑to‑follow magic rules, lots of action, and just enough romance to keep things emotionally charged without overwhelming the quest plot. It’s a natural fit for readers who grew up on myth‑based adventures and want something a bit older, with more focus on choice, consequence, and complicated feelings.
Elementals stands alone as its own complete arc, and it also sets up the shared Elementals universe that continues in Elementals Academy.
