The Discovery of Magic

by Michelle Madow

2022

College student Summer Donovan thinks juggling classes and bills is tough until a sorority bully pushes her to unleash something impossible: magic. Whisked away to Elementals Academy, a school for witches descended from Greek gods, she must learn to control her unpredictable powers and resist her dangerous pull toward icy, mysterious Zane.

Series background & context

Elementals Academy returns to the world of Greek‑god descendants a few years after the events of Elementals, but shifts the focus to a new heroine and a new kind of magic. Summer Donovan is a college student trying to afford an expensive private school when a vicious encounter with a sorority president pushes her to defend herself — and she accidentally unleashes raw magic she never knew she had.

That outburst exposes her heritage as a witch descended from the gods and earns her a place at Elementals Academy, an elite school where students train to control elemental powers. At first, Summer is thrilled to find a community where magic is normal and she finally fits in.

The feeling doesn’t last. Her abilities don’t line up with any of the usual elements, and strange things happen when she practices. Instead of air, fire, water, or earth, Summer seems to command metal and gems, an unheard‑of talent that makes the faculty nervous and the Witch Council outright suspicious.

Her other complication is Zane Caldwell, a cold, powerful, and infuriatingly attractive upper‑year student assigned to help her survive the academy’s brutal trials. Their chemistry is obvious, but Zane is hiding secrets of his own. As the series goes on, Summer learns he’s tied to a different pantheon entirely, and their connection puts them on opposite sides of a growing conflict between Greek and Norse magic.

Across the four books, Summer digs into the academy’s history and uncovers a web of lies, missing memories, and buried prophecies. Murders, cover‑ups, and a rising threat from rival gods force her to decide who deserves her loyalty: the people who raised her, the classmates who’ve become family, or the boy who risked everything to protect her.

Readers can expect academy rituals, dangerous practical exams, secret tunnels, and plenty of late‑night scheming. The romance slow‑burns from antagonistic to intense, set against a backdrop of looming war and questions about what kind of future witches descended from the gods will have.

Elementals Academy can be read on its own, but readers who know the original Elementals series will enjoy seeing how familiar mythology evolves in the next generation.
