Series background & context

The Elemental series is built around the Merrick brothers, a family of boys who can control earth, fire, air, and water. That power sounds cool at first. In practice, it makes them targets. They are being watched, hunted, and forced to hide huge parts of themselves while trying to survive school, work, grief, and ordinary teenage drama.

Family is the engine here. Michael, the oldest brother, has spent years acting like a parent as much as a sibling, and that responsibility hangs over the whole series. The prequel novella Elemental gives a useful first look at that pressure through Michael and Emily, whose attraction is tangled up with family loyalty and real danger. From there, the novels shift focus across the brothers, letting each one carry a different piece of the larger conflict.

In Storm, Becca Chandler gets pulled into the Merricks' world after she saves Chris in a school parking lot and learns he is not remotely ordinary. Spark follows Gabriel, hotheaded and vulnerable in equal measure, as suspicion falls on him when fires break out around town. Spirit turns to Hunter Garrity, a loner with his own dangerous past, while Secret and Sacrifice push the family toward open crisis.

The magic matters, but the relationships matter more.

What keeps the series readable is how grounded it stays even when the weather starts acting strange. These books are full of rumors, money problems, school pressure, crushes, breakups, jealousy, and the weight of secrets that never stay buried for long. Kemmerer treats the supernatural as part of everyday life rather than a shiny escape from it, so the emotional stakes feel immediate even when the plot turns violent.

The linked novellas, especially Fearless and Breathless, add extra texture between the main books. They deepen Hunter's story, fill in Nick's emotional arc, and make the series feel less like separate couples and more like one ongoing family saga. That is helpful because the tension builds across the whole run, not just inside one romance at a time.

If you want paranormal YA with a strong family spine, multiple points of view, and a lot of heart under the chaos, this is the shape of the series. It works best in order, because loyalties, grudges, and power struggles keep carrying forward from one book to the next.
