Author bio
Brigid Kemmerer was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but she did not stay in one place for long. Her family moved around the country, including stops in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Cleveland, Ohio, before settling near Annapolis, Maryland. That restless early map feels fitting for a writer whose characters are often pushed out of their comfort zones and forced to figure out who they are.
She started writing early, even before high school, and has said that part of the impulse came from wanting more books like the ones she loved to read.
For a long time, writing was not her full-time job. Kemmerer worked in finance while raising a family and building her career book by book. That slow climb matters. Her bibliography shows someone learning different ways to tell a love story, a mystery, and a fantasy, then folding all of that experience into later work.
Her early Elemental books introduced readers to the Merrick brothers, a family of teens with dangerous elemental powers and very human problems. She followed that with Thicker Than Water, a paranormal thriller, then shifted into contemporary YA with Letters to the Lost, a grief-soaked story about anonymous letters, second chances, and the relief of being truly understood.
Letters to the Lost and More Than We Can Tell helped define another side of her writing. Kemmerer is especially good at characters who are carrying too much, trauma, family pressure, social fallout, or secrets they can barely say out loud. Even when the plot is high concept, the emotional core stays close and personal.
A bigger breakout came with A Curse So Dark and Lonely, her fantasy reimagining of Beauty and the Beast. The book brought together fairy-tale atmosphere, sharp banter, and a heroine with cerebral palsy, a choice Kemmerer has connected to a friend she grew up with. The success of that series helped her leave finance and become a full-time writer, and later fantasy books like Defy the Night and Forging Silver into Stars kept expanding her world of political tension, rebellion, and messy loyalties.
She does not write neat, easy lives, and that is a big part of why readers trust her.
Across her books, the same interests keep showing up in new shapes: outsiders, divided loyalties, wounded families, hidden power, and people trying to do the decent thing when every option has a cost. More recently she moved into adult fantasy with Warrior Princess Assassin, bringing the same emotional pressure to a broader, steamier canvas. Her books have sold more than one million copies and have been translated into more than 20 languages.
Now she lives in the Baltimore area with her family and writes full time. When she is not working or being a mom, she has said you can often find her lifting weights. It is a grounded detail, and somehow a perfect fit for the toughness and heart in her fiction.
