E Michael Helms was born in Marietta, Georgia, and grew up in Panama City, Florida, on the Gulf Coast. The Florida Panhandle stayed with him, not just as home, but as a lasting backdrop for his fiction. As a young man he loved sports, especially baseball, and he was offered a junior college scholarship before choosing a very different path.

After high school, Helms joined the Marine Corps. He served as a rifleman with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines during some of the hardest fighting of the Vietnam War, and his tour ended after he was wounded three times in a single day. His combat service later earned him the Purple Heart, but the deeper mark was personal. Those experiences became the emotional core of much of his writing.

Before his books found a wider readership, Helms freelanced articles for local and national publications, wrote short fiction, and edited military, veterans, and Christian tabloids. Writing was not a side hobby he discovered late. It was work he kept returning to. When he completed part of what would become The Proud Bastards, he sent it to an editor at a magazine he had written for, and that helped open the door to his first full-length book.

The Proud Bastards, first published in 1990, is still the title many readers know best. It follows Helms from Parris Island boot camp into Vietnam and the Tet era in a voice that feels close to the ground, direct, unsentimental, and personal. He later returned to the subject in The Private War of Corporal Henson, a semi autobiographical novel about a former Marine trying to live with PTSD long after the shooting stops. Readers who connect with these books usually mention the same thing, they do not feel polished for effect. They feel lived.

The war never really left him.

History pulled at him too. Helms spent years researching Of Blood and Brothers, his two-book Civil War and Reconstruction saga about Daniel and Elijah Malburn, brothers who wind up on opposite sides of the war. The premise was loosely based on a real family story from the Florida Panhandle. Readers who like these books often point to the strong sense of place, the family tension, and the way Helms writes battle from the inside out.

Then he changed course.

After so much writing about war and its aftermath, Helms wanted something different, and a little more room to breathe. That led to the Mac McClellan mysteries, beginning with Deadly Catch. He once described the spark as a simple image, a man out fishing who hooks a badly decomposed body. From there came Mac McClellan, a retired Marine turned investigator, and later books like Deadly Ruse, Deadly Dunes, and Deadly Spirits. Set along the Florida Panhandle coast Helms knew well, these mysteries mix murder, buried secrets, local corruption, and a strong regional feel. Readers often come for the cases, then stay for the setting and the steady partnership between Mac and Kate Bell.

Later in life he and his wife, Karen, lived in the Upstate region of South Carolina near the Blue Ridge foothills. He wrote about hiking, canoeing, bird watching, and playing guitar, small pleasures that sit a long way from a battlefield. Even when he shifted genres, the threads in his work stayed recognizable, memory, loyalty, survival, the weight of the past, and the complicated work of coming home.
