Author bio
Angela Marsons grew up in Brierley Hill in England's Black Country, a place of factories, estates and shopping centres that would later shape the landscapes of her crime novels. Before she wrote full time, she spent almost two decades working as a security guard at Merry Hill Shopping Centre.
At junior school she fell in love with stories, often watching people from the sidelines and turning them into characters on the page. Teachers noticed that her imagination sometimes seemed more important to her than the lesson in front of her, and that habit of close observation never really went away.
For years Marsons wrote relationship driven novels about women on the edge, including early versions of what became Dear Mother and The Forgotten Woman. She sent out manuscripts, collected encouraging rejections and kept stacking new pages in a drawer while working nights and weekends at the mall.
By her own account she faced around twenty five years of knock backs from traditional publishers. That long stretch of silence ended when digital publisher Bookouture offered her a multi book deal and encouraged her to write the crime stories she had always devoured as a reader.
Out of that chance came Detective Inspector Kim Stone, the prickly, driven cop at the heart of Silent Scream, Evil Games and the long running Black Country series that followed. The first three Kim Stone books were released in 2015 and quickly climbed the ebook charts, allowing Marsons to leave security work and write full time.
The Kim Stone novels are known for their mix of tight police procedure and emotional punch. Marsons often places her characters in working class estates, children's homes, quarries, body farms and private schools, exploring themes of childhood trauma, exploitation, hate crime, human trafficking and the harm done by institutions that are supposed to protect people.
At the centre is Kim herself, a foster home survivor who rides a motorbike, restores old engines in her shed and lets very few people past her defences. Over the series readers have come to know her small circle, from steady partner Bryant and hacker turned detective Stacey Wood to wary journalist Tracy Frost and recurring nemesis Dr Alexandra Thorne.
Alongside the crime series, Marsons continues to write stand alone fiction. Books like Dear Mother and The Forgotten Woman focus on damaged families, addiction and hard won friendship, while If Only shows her lighter side in a romantic comedy about office life, self doubt and second chances.
Her work has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been translated into dozens of languages. The Italian edition of Dead Souls, titled Le verità sepolte, won the crime fiction prize Premio Bancarella in 2020, bringing her Black Country detective to a whole new audience.
Marsons still lives in the Black Country, now in Worcestershire, with her partner, a couple of boisterous dogs and a famously rude parrot. She writes most days, fuelled by coffee and curiosity, firmly rooted in the place and people that first made her want to tell stories.
