Series background & context

Dragon's Gift: The Valkyrie is Bree Blackwood's series in the Scotland based DragonGods corner of Hall's larger universe. If the early FireSouls books feel like urban fantasy with treasure and demons, Bree's books feel a little more open air. The setting shifts to Scotland, but the core Hall ingredients stay in place, hidden magic, quick pacing, danger that arrives early, and a heroine who is not going to wait around for someone else to fix her problems.

Bree's arc is also one of the places where the Blackwood family connection helps. Her story stands on its own, but reading it inside the wider DragonGods setup gives the books a nice sense of shared momentum. You can feel that other characters are living in the same magical world even when the focus stays close to Bree.

The title tells you a lot about the tone.

There is a warrior edge to this series. Even when Hall moves Bree through undercover work, magical schools, and increasingly dangerous missions, the through line is action. These books are built for readers who want a heroine in motion. The magical problems are not abstract. They are the kind that require running toward trouble and surviving it.

The Scotland setting adds a slightly older, more myth-laced mood than some of Hall's city based series. That does not make the books slower. It just gives them a different backdrop, a world where old power feels close, landscapes matter, and the supernatural seems woven into the place rather than hidden neatly behind it.

Romance is present throughout, but this branch still reads primarily as adventurous urban fantasy romance rather than pure paranormal romance. If you like Hall best when she is balancing action, worldbuilding, and character chemistry without letting any one piece take over, Bree's series fits that balance well.

The five books also have a satisfying progression. The titles suggest exactly what the series is doing, moving from secrecy and infiltration toward training, pursuit, conflict, and finally mastery. That makes it easy to settle into the rhythm and trust that the stakes are going somewhere.

Start with Undercover Magic. If you want the Dragon's Gift world from a Scotland based angle, with warrior energy and a heroine who keeps getting handed problems too large for anyone sensible to touch, this is a strong subseries to follow.
