Series background & context

Dragon's Gift: The Huntress is the clearest starting point for Linsey Hall's Dragon's Gift world. The series follows Cass Clereaux, who is good at finding magical treasure, killing demons, and hiding the fact that she is a FireSoul, one of the rare people born with a piece of a dragon's soul. That gift makes her powerful, but it also makes her a target. If the wrong people learn what she is, she is dead.

That secret shapes everything Cass does.

Cass works because she is capable without ever being comfortable. Her life is built on survival and improvisation. She hunts magic for a living, but she cannot use her own powers freely. She wants money, answers, and a chance to stay alive, and none of those goals are simple in a world where magical governments and supernatural predators both have reasons to fear someone like her.

The first book, Ancient Magic, also shows one of Hall's recurring strengths, using old objects and buried history as active parts of the plot. Cass gets pulled into a hunt for an ancient scroll that could expose her secret, and from there the series keeps mixing artifact trouble, missing memories, enemies in pursuit, and a romance with shifter Aidan Merrick. Aidan is powerful enough to be a problem all by himself, which makes him a good match for Cass. She cannot ignore him, but she cannot fully trust him either.

As the series goes on, the mystery of Cass's past becomes more important. That gives the five books a solid through line. This is not just monster of the week adventure. It is a story about a woman trying to understand what was done to her, what she really is, and whether she can survive long enough to use that truth.

The tone is classic Hall, quick moving, easy to read, and full of supernatural action without losing the human side. Cass has friends, loyalties, and a stubborn streak that keeps the books fun even when the stakes get dark. There is also a clear found-family current here that later Dragon's Gift branches build on.

Start with Ancient Magic. If you want the version of Hall that best mixes treasure hunting, dragon magic, demons, romance, and hidden history, this is the series that lays the foundation for everything that follows.
