The New Mexico setting does a lot of work here. These books move through small towns, high desert landscapes, monasteries, and places where history never feels all that far away. Hinton uses that backdrop well. The faith element is real, but it does not flatten the mysteries into easy lessons. Instead, it gives the series a particular mood, part whodunit, part family story, part vocation crisis.

Sister Eve herself is the reason to stay.

She is smart, stubborn, caring, and not especially interested in standing quietly on the sidelines while other people make bad decisions. Her relationship with her father gives the series warmth and some of its best humor, and the cases usually matter because they reach into family, friendship, and conscience, not just crime scene logic. There is also a light touch of romance and mysticism around the edges, which fits the series better than you might expect.

If you want mysteries that balance suspense with character, and that care as much about spiritual conflict as clue-chasing, this series is a good fit. The books are modern, readable, and a little unusual in the best way. They offer murder, family trouble, New Mexico atmosphere, and one very determined nun trying to figure out which life is really hers.
