Author bio
Lynne Hinton grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the youngest of three children in a family of pastors. Church was part of daily life from the beginning, not just a Sunday thing, and that mix of faith, community, food, and ordinary human mess would later show up all through her fiction.
She knew early that ministry mattered to her, even before she had many models for what a woman in ministry could be. She studied at Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, spent time studying filmmaking at the North Carolina School of the Arts, and later earned a Master of Divinity from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California.
Berkeley opened a new door.
While studying there, she read widely and found herself pulled toward stories that were bigger, stranger, and more honest than the narrow world she had known growing up. She has said that this was the period when she learned about writing and storytelling in a new way, and when she first felt pushed to tell some of her own stories. After returning to North Carolina, she worked as a hospice chaplain and then served as a pastor in Guilford County and Asheboro.
Her first novel, Friendship Cake, was published in 2000, but the heart of it was already close to home. She wrote it while serving a rural congregation that loved to eat, and you can feel that lived-in knowledge on the page. The book became a New York Times bestseller and introduced the Hope Springs world, where church kitchens, cookbook committees, grief, gossip, and deep loyalty all matter. Readers who love Forever Friends, Christmas Cake, and Wedding Cake usually come for the comfort and stay for the way Hinton lets friendship get messy, tender, and real.
She also writes well outside that lane. The Things I Know Best leans into family secrets and inherited gifts in a small North Carolina town. Pie Town moves west to New Mexico and won state fiction honors there. In Sister Eve, Private Eye, she came up with one of her most memorable setups, a Benedictine nun who may be just as suited to detective work as she is to religious life.
That tension suits her.
Again and again, Hinton returns to a few big questions. What do people owe family, even when family has failed them? What keeps a community together when illness, loss, race, class, or belief make life harder? And how do people keep going when faith feels thin? Even in later standalones like The View from Here and The Beekeeper's Wife, she stays interested in healing, belonging, and the small turns that can change a life.
Alongside writing, she has served as an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, a senior pastor, a hospice chaplain, and an interim pastor. She has also written under the names Lynne Branard and Jackie Lynn. Much of her work moves between North Carolina and New Mexico, the two landscapes that seem to have shaped her most.
For years she has made her home in Albuquerque with her husband. It fits. Her novels do too, rooted in place, interested in people, and never far from a kitchen table, a church hallway, or one more story waiting to be told.
