Devil's Isle Books in Order

The Devil's Isle books are set in a New Orleans changed by war. Years before the series begins, the Veil between the human world and the world Beyond tore open, magic flooded in, and the city was left scarred. Paranormals are now confined to a walled district that humans call Devil's Isle, and fear shapes just about every law and conversation.

At the center is Claire Connolly, a young woman hiding a dangerous secret. She is a Sensitive, a human infected with magic when the Veil fell, and that power could get her imprisoned if the wrong people learn about it. When bounty hunter Liam Quinn sees Claire use magic to save someone in public, her quiet plan for staying unnoticed comes to an end.

From there, the series becomes both survival story and slow-burn partnership.

Liam is not written as a simple rescuer. He knows what magic can do to people, and his first instinct is caution, not trust. That makes the early books interesting, because Claire has to learn control in a world that already assumes the worst about her. Around them is a tense city full of human authorities, paranormal communities, smugglers, militants, and ordinary people trying to live after catastrophe.

The larger arc keeps widening. What begins as Claire learning to understand her abilities turns into fights over cults, magical corruption, old enemies, and eventually the war beyond New Orleans itself. The series uses the city's mood well, with humid streets, damaged neighborhoods, and a sense that the last disaster never really ended. It is post-apocalyptic in setup, but still personal in scale.

Expect a grittier tone than Neill's Chicago books.

Even so, the heart of the series is not despair. Claire grows into her power, Liam becomes more than the man chasing trouble from one block to the next, and their allies matter. The books care about community, about who gets protected and who gets sacrificed when fear becomes policy. Start with The Veil, then move through The Sight, The Hunt, and The Beyond, because each book pushes the same conflict into a larger and more dangerous space.
