Series background & context
The Chicagoland Vampires books begin with Merit, a University of Chicago graduate student whose ordinary life ends the night she is attacked and turned against her will. That one moment drops her into Cadogan House, one of the city's powerful vampire Houses, and under the authority of Ethan Sullivan, its polished, demanding Master. From there, the series grows into a long-running urban fantasy about House politics, public scrutiny, and the fact that Merit never asked for any of this.
Chicago is more than scenery here.
Once vampires step into public view, every decision becomes political. Merit serves as Cadogan House's Sentinel, which means bodyguard, enforcer, and investigator all at once. The job keeps her moving between vampire intrigues, city government, crime scenes, and uneasy alliances with other supernaturals. Humans are watching, reporters are circling, and the distance between coexistence and open conflict is usually very small.
The world gets bigger as the books go on. Shifters, sorcerers, and other powerful factions all have their own histories and grudges, and the series likes to show how those old rivalries flare up in modern Chicago. Some books lean into murder investigation, some into magical catastrophe, and some into outright political crisis, but the thread that holds them together is Merit trying to protect her House without losing herself inside its rules.
The romance is a major part of the appeal, but it is not the only engine. Merit and Ethan spend a lot of time clashing, circling, and slowly learning how to trust each other, and that relationship develops alongside the larger series plot. Around them is a strong supporting cast of friends, allies, rivals, and the kind of people who can rescue you in one chapter and infuriate you in the next.
These books like their action sharp and their banter sharper.
If you are wondering what the series feels like from book to book, think urban fantasy with a strong paranormal romance thread, a clear sense of place, and a real interest in rules, loyalties, and consequences. There are also novellas threaded through the main run, so readers who like side stories can spend more time with secondary characters and smaller crises between the bigger turning points. Start with Some Girls Bite and read in order, because the emotional arcs and Chicago power struggles build on each other.
