Chloe Neill was born in Arkansas and raised in the South, but her fiction is closely tied to the Midwest she later made home. She built a career in law before publishing fiction, and that practical side still shows up in her books. Her stories may be full of vampires, magic, and sea battles, but they also care about work, duty, rules, and the cost of power.
She did not start out as someone who loved writing.
Neill has said that writing used to intimidate her, and that it only became less frightening after she had to do more of it in everyday work. She began writing seriously in 2005, finished an early manuscript she eventually set aside, and then moved on to Some Girls Bite. That novel introduced Merit, a Chicago graduate student who is unwillingly turned into a vampire, and it launched the long-running Chicagoland Vampires series.
Those books are still the place many readers first meet her. They combine vampire House politics, Chicago neighborhood detail, supernatural turf wars, and a slow-burn romance between Merit and Ethan Sullivan. Readers who like smart heroines, sharp banter, and a strong sense of place tend to settle in quickly.
Neill kept widening the map. With the Dark Elite books, beginning with Firespell, she shifted that same fast-moving energy into young adult fantasy and a Chicago boarding school with a hidden magical life. Later, in The Veil, she moved to a rougher, post-war New Orleans, where Claire Connolly has to survive in a city shaped by fear, magic, and old damage.
She likes capable heroines under pressure.
That thread carries through her later work. Wild Hunger follows Elisa Sullivan, the only vampire ever born, as she tries to make her own choices inside a world already full of expectations about who she should be. The Bright and Breaking Sea turns toward seafaring fantasy, with Captain Kit Brightling navigating war, class, and magic on the open water. And Ember Eternal opens a newer romantasy path, centered on a thief named Fox who is pulled into palace intrigue after spotting an assassin.
Across all of those books, Neill tends to return to the same concerns: hidden power, uneasy alliances, found family, and women who have to think as fast as they fight. Even when the settings change, from Chicago streets to New Orleans ruins to warships and royal courts, her stories keep a clear sense of momentum. They are interested in consequences, in what loyalty demands, and in how communities hold together when the rules stop working.
These are not dreamy, far-away fantasies. They are brisk, grounded stories where magic usually comes with politics, paperwork, or cleanup.
Neill now lives in the Midwest with her gamer husband and their dog, Henry. Outside the novels, she describes herself as a voracious reader and an obsessive maker of things, and that currently includes baking, quilting, and needlepoint. That mix feels right for her books, too. They are orderly enough to hold a big fantasy world together, but lively enough to keep it moving.
