Series background & context

The Detective Sebastian Clifford books shift the focus from an official police unit to a small private investigation agency in the English Midlands. The series opens with Web of Lies, where Clifford, a former specialist officer from London, is pushed out of the force after a scandal and has to build a new life from scratch.

Clifford's standout trait is his memory. He can recall tiny details from scenes and conversations long after everyone else has forgotten, a gift that helps him untangle complex timelines and hidden connections. It is also a burden, because he struggles to let go of past mistakes, including the case that ended his policing career. Each investigation pushes him to decide how much of that past he is willing to revisit.

Early on, he crosses paths with Detective Constable Lucinda Bird, better known as Birdie. Underused and underestimated in her own department, Birdie barges into his first case and more or less refuses to leave. Where Clifford is controlled and methodical, she is impulsive and talkative. Their partnership becomes the heart of the series, mixing sharp banter with a growing sense of loyalty.

The cases they take on often begin with people who have run out of options. In Web of Lies a cousin begs Clifford to prove that her high-profile husband did not kill himself. Speak No Evil centres on a little girl found abandoned on the streets who will not speak about what happened to her. Never Too Late pulls in DCI Whitney Walker when her brother's decades-old assault resurfaces in dangerous ways, creating a crossover with the Cavendish & Walker world.

Later books broaden the canvas. Clifford and Birdie investigate a stolen art haul and a missing fiancé in Hidden From Sight, blackmail tied to a children's television star in Fear the Truth, and a hidden son whose kidney may be the only hope for a dying half-brother in Wake The Past. In Question of Guilt, they dive into a historic murder tied to political activism and corruption, where powerful people would prefer the past to stay buried.

Across the series, the tone stays pacey and character driven. The books lean into the puzzle of each mystery, but they also keep returning to themes of second chances, found family and what justice looks like outside a formal police badge. If you start with Web of Lies and move forward in order, you see Clifford and Birdie grow from uneasy partners into a tight-knit team, carrying their scars, and their sense of humour, from one case to the next.
