Author bio

Sally Rigby was born in Northampton, UK, and has spent most of her working life around words and stories. After leaving university she took jobs in magazines and radio, learning how to grab people’s attention quickly and hold it.

Later she moved into education, lecturing in further and higher education. Standing in front of classrooms and lecture theatres gave her an eye for how people behave under pressure, a skill that slips naturally into her crime fiction.

Sally has always had the travel bug. She lived in Manchester and London before moving overseas with her family, spending many years in New Zealand with a spell in Australia. She still describes New Zealand as one of the most beautiful places in the world, even though she is now based in Winchester in the south of England.

Before turning to crime fiction, she wrote young adult novels under a pen name. Crime stories, though, were the ones she always reached for as a reader, whether it was books, films or television dramas. Eventually she decided to write the kind of cases she loved to watch, drawing on a long-standing fascination with the psychology of serial killers and the people who hunt them.

That decision became the Cavendish & Walker novels, fast-paced police procedurals set in the fictional city of Lenchester. The books pair down-to-earth DCI Whitney Walker, a single mother who came up through the ranks, with forensic psychologist Dr Georgina Cavendish, an academic who is brilliant, prickly and more comfortable with theory than small talk. Across books like Deadly Games, Fatal Justice and Dark Secrets, the series balances twisty investigations with the evolving friendship between two very different women.

Sally then widened her fictional world with the Detective Sebastian Clifford series. Clifford is an ex-police officer with an exceptional memory, trying to rebuild his life as a private investigator in the Midlands. Working alongside detective-turned-partner Lucinda "Birdie" Bird, he tackles cold cases, blackmail and long-buried family secrets in titles such as Web of Lies, Speak No Evil, Never Too Late and Hidden From Sight. The books often cross paths with Whitney Walker, giving readers the sense of a shared universe of detectives, victims and suspects.

Another strand of her work takes readers to the Cornish coast in the Cornwall Murder Mystery series, where DCI Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price investigate crimes against a backdrop of cliffs, coves and tourist towns. Books like The Lost Girls of Penzance and Murder at Land's End lean into the contrast between postcard scenery and the dark things people do behind closed doors.

Alongside the police procedurals, Sally co-writes psychological thrillers with fellow author Amanda Ashby. Writing together, the pair focus on ordinary people whose lives are upended by guilt, obsession and buried truths in novels such as Remember Me?, I Will Find You, The Ex Wife, The Stepmother and The Silent Guest. These stories swap crime-scene tape for kitchens, classrooms and suburban streets, but keep the same interest in motive and consequence.

Whether she is following detectives through tough investigations or digging into the secrets of one family, Sally keeps her prose straightforward and focused on character. Her background in teaching and her love of crime fiction give her a feel for pacing, dialogue and the small details that make a case feel real. She continues to build out her interconnected series, offering readers plenty of routes into her version of the crime genre.
