Detective Ryan Chase (MK Farrar) Books in Order

The Detective Ryan Chase series follows a Bristol detective who has little room to keep his working life and personal grief separate. Ryan investigates serious crimes with his team, but he arrives at the first case already struggling with loss and a damaged home life. That gives the books a more bruised, personal feeling than a procedural where the detective simply moves on after each arrest.

The best place to begin is Kill Chase. When body parts are recovered from the River Avon, Ryan and the Bristol Major Crimes team have to identify the victims and work out what connects them. The case takes him into a world where good intentions and bad motives are not always easy to separate. It also introduces the pressure Ryan carries outside the investigation.

The job does not give him a clean reset.

The series continues with Chase Down, Paper Chase, Chase the Dead, and Silent Chase. Each novel gives Ryan and his colleagues a new murder inquiry, while the ongoing relationships in the team and Ryan's own emotional state remain part of the background. Paper Chase begins with a particularly shocking killing and expands into a hunt for a murderer with a brutal pattern. In Silent Chase, a death initially thought to be suicide points toward a killer trying to keep a long-buried secret hidden.

There is also System Failure, a short story set early in Ryan's world. It works well as an extra introduction, but Kill Chase is the natural first full novel. Readers who want the clearest experience of the character arc should follow the novels in order, then place the short story wherever they prefer as a quick additional case.

Bristol matters here. The city and nearby landscape give the investigations a grounded British setting, from the River Avon to rail lines and neighborhoods where ordinary lives can conceal ugly truths. The crimes are grim, but the series keeps returning to the detective work itself: interviews, evidence, the team comparing notes, and the slow work of deciding which lead can be trusted.

Ryan is not a superhero detective. He is capable, exhausted, sometimes distracted by what he has lost, and still determined to do right by victims. His colleagues matter too, which helps the books feel like team procedurals instead of solo detective stories.

Choose Ryan Chase if you want a short, complete run of darker British police thrillers. The cases have sharp hooks, but the reason to read in sequence is Ryan himself, and the way each investigation leaves a mark.
