Series background & context

The Detective Matt Ballard books follow an older investigator whose career has been shaped by one terrible case on the Fens. They mix solid police work with a strong sense of history, memory and the way old crimes linger in a community.

Matt Ballard has spent his working life in and around the fenland, and he knows every drainage ditch and wind‑bent tree. In Beware the Past, the first book, we learn about the investigation that never left him alone: three boys murdered near Gibbet Fen, and a suspect killed in a hit‑and‑run before any trial. Decades later, anonymous photographs and a fresh killing suggest the real murderer may have been watching all along.

Where the Nikki Galena books lean on an active squad room, the Ballard series often shows a man on the cusp of retirement, still pulled back into danger. Friends and former colleagues feature strongly. Matt works alongside Liz, a capable detective in her own right, and stays close to Will and Kate, whose move to a country house in The Dying Light brings a new tangle of folklore, strange lights on the marsh and very human malice.

The stories are steeped in place. The Fens here feel slightly older and quieter, full of abandoned airfields, crumbling farmhouses and half‑remembered tragedies. Five Bloody Hearts and later books explore how violence in the past can warp someone’s whole life, and how easy it is for a community to decide who the “monster” must be, whether or not the evidence really fits.

In Marshlight the mysteries are more domestic but no less unsettling, involving missing women, a bookshop that puts people on edge and dangerous games played on the marshes at night. Trick of the Night and The Bag of Secrets continue that blend of everyday worries and sharply escalating threat, showing that retirement on the Fens doesn’t mean leaving the shadows behind.

Compared with Ellis’s other series, the Matt Ballard books feel a touch more reflective. They still have plenty of pace and menace, but there is also room for older friendships, doubts about past decisions and the question of what a lifetime in policing really costs. If you enjoy crime stories where the landscape is eerie, the past is never quite finished and the detective carries his own ghosts, this series is a good fit.
