Crime on the Fens

DI Nikki Galena is burning out, driven by rage over her daughter’s drug‑induced coma and her crusade against local dealers. When masked gangs terrorise Greenborough and a student vanishes on the marsh, she and new sergeant Joseph Easter must somehow learn to work together.
Series background & context
The DI Nikki Galena and DS Joe Easter novels are where Joy Ellis first mapped the dark corners of the Lincolnshire Fens. The series centres on Greenborough, a fictional market town whose pretty streets sit on the edge of treacherous marshland, and on a detective who has almost run out of patience with the world.
When we meet Nikki in Crime on the Fens, she is brittle, furious and close to being pushed out of the job. Her daughter lies in a long‑term care ward after taking drugs supplied by local dealers, and Nikki has spent years waging a one‑woman war on anyone she blames. Complaints are piling up. Her last chance is to make things work with a new sergeant, Joseph Easter, or walk away.
Joseph arrives with the unfortunate nickname “Holy Joe” and a reputation for being impossibly straight. Underneath the calm exterior, though, he has his own scars from military service and an estranged daughter who wants nothing to do with him. Watching Nikki and Joseph move from mutual suspicion to real trust is one of the running threads of the books.
Each case shows a different face of the Fens. Early stories deal with masked gangs terrorising a town, neighbours who may have pushed a man from a church tower, and deliberate attacks on Nikki’s own officers. Killer on the Fens mixes a dying father’s mysterious last request with a dead drug dealer found on a supposedly haunted airfield. Stalker on the Fens brings back a villain from Nikki’s past just as a close friend becomes convinced she’s being hunted.
The middle of the series leans into cold cases and the way old cruelty bleeds into the present. Buried on the Fens uncovers a secret society and decades of abuse in a seemingly quiet village. Hidden on the Fens starts with a derelict cottage in the trees and a girl who vanished fifteen years before. Secrets on the Fens features couples posed like tragic lovers, forcing Nikki and Joseph to ask who is being punished and why.
Later books raise the stakes for the whole area. In Fire on the Fens a killer arsonist uses a wave of fires and a fringe religious group to mask their real motives. Darkness on the Fens takes place during the Dark Greenborough Festival, where poisoned drink turns celebration into panic. Graves on the Fens and Echoes on the Fens push even closer to home, confronting Nikki with anonymous messages about old failures and a series of deaths that seem to orbit her own mother.
For all the darkness, the books also carve out space for warmth. Nikki’s formidable mother and her circle of older friends offer humour, food and unexpected help. Joseph’s family life mends in fits and starts. The team around them grows into a found family, even as they drive through deep fog on single‑track roads to face whatever waits out on the marsh.
If you like your police procedurals emotionally charged, character‑driven and rooted in a very distinctive landscape, this series is a strong place to spend time.
