Series background & context
Detective Gaby Darin is a North Wales police procedural series built around cases that quickly become more complicated than they first appear. Gaby works with a Major Incident Team, following missing-person reports, suspicious deaths, old evidence, and the private histories people would prefer to leave alone. The books put the investigation first, but they also keep an eye on the people doing the job.
Gaby is a direct, stubborn detective with a sharp instinct for the detail that does not fit. She can be impatient and blunt, yet she is deeply committed to victims and to her colleagues. Her team includes detectives with different strengths and temperaments, while pathologist Dr Rusty Mulholland becomes an important part of Gaby's life outside the station. Their relationships develop across the series without taking over the cases.
North Wales matters here.
The setting gives the books their sense of place, from coastal towns and rural roads to police stations and close-knit communities where everyone knows something, but not always the whole truth. The landscape can feel open and beautiful, yet it also gives suspects and secrets plenty of places to hide. Welsh place names, local routines, and the pressures of small communities are woven into the investigations.
The series begins with Silent Cry, also published as Missing in Wales. Five years after Izzy Grant's partner and newborn daughter disappear, a new note revives the case. Gaby has recently arrived from Swansea with a painful past of her own, and she sees that the old investigation has missed something. It is a strong place to begin because it introduces Gaby, her new team, and the mix of personal stakes and methodical police work that carries through the later books.
Each novel has its own central mystery. Darkest Night starts with a woman waking beside her murdered housemate and no memory of the night before. Fallen Angel returns Gaby to a cold case involving the death of a teenage girl. In Lost Souls, the search for a missing ten-year-old becomes entangled with a disturbing discovery at a crematorium. Buried Lies follows a mother who comes home to a dead fiancé and a missing son, while Cold Grave sends the team after a predator linked to the disappearance of several teenage girls.
The cases are dark, but the series is not all gloom.
There is room for dry humour, friendship, disagreements in the squad room, and the ordinary complications of family life. O'Brien lets clues emerge gradually, so readers can follow Gaby's reasoning while still being nudged toward the wrong conclusion now and then. The books work as individual investigations, but reading in order gives the best view of Gaby's changing role in the team and the relationships around her.
Expect brisk, character-led crime stories with strong emotional stakes, plenty of suspects, and a detective who keeps pushing when an answer feels too easy.
