Threads of Resistance is Jenny O'Brien's Second World War historical fiction series, linking ordinary skills such as knitting and dressmaking to extraordinary acts of courage. The books move between Guernsey, Britain, and occupied France, with Paris at the centre of much of the danger. They focus on women whose work might make them seem invisible, while their choices place them close to the machinery of resistance and espionage.

Eighteen-year-old Leonora, known as Lenny Gallienne, learns that her brother is missing after Dunkirk and is drawn into Churchill's secret army.

Lenny goes to Paris and works in a bookshop on Rue de la Pompe as part of her cover. She is trained to use knitting patterns to encode intelligence, turning knit and purl stitches into messages that can travel unnoticed. Her work brings her into the orbit of fellow agent Harry Dennison, as well as the wider French Resistance. The danger is immediate: discovery could mean arrest, torture, or death, and Lenny must learn whom she can trust.

The series is interested in the long aftermath of wartime choices. A secret buried for decades does not stay in the past just because the fighting has ended. Family members in later timelines have to piece together what their relatives endured, why they stayed quiet, and how the war shaped the people they became.

The Secret Dressmaker continues the threads theme while shifting attention to dressmaking in Paris. It includes characters from the first book and introduces Flora Toussaint, a parachute packer with twin daughters. Flora is sent from Manchester to Paris to identify a traitor, a mission that brings her into the world of Le Moulin Rouge and Maison Lumière, a fictional fashion house. Sewing, fashion, and the risks of working under occupation become central to the new story.

The books are built as historical suspense rather than battlefield fiction. There are spies, coded messages, false identities, and close calls, but there are also homes, workplaces, family ties, romance, grief, and the daily strain of living under occupation. The stakes remain personal because a single betrayal can put a whole network at risk.
