Where should I start?
If you want classic Mithgar from the beginning: The Dark Tide → Shadows of Doom → The Darkest Day → Trek to Kraggen-Cor → The Brega Path.
If you prefer a single sweeping epic first: Dragondoom → The Dragonstone → The Eye of the Hunter.
If fairy tale retellings appeal most: Once Upon a Winter's Night → Once Upon a Summer Day → Once Upon an Autumn Eve → Once Upon a Spring Morn → Once Upon a Dreadful Time.
If you like science fiction with virtual reality: Caverns of Socrates/Shadowtrap → Shadowprey.
If you want later Mithgar history and high stakes prophecy: Silver Wolf, Black Falcon → City of Jade → Stolen Crown.
Author bio
Dennis L. McKiernan grew up in Moberly, Missouri, a small railroad town where books and daydreams offered endless doors out into other worlds. As a kid he swapped stories with friends and discovered early that he liked making things up as much as he liked reading them.
At eighteen he joined the U.S. Air Force and spent four years on duty during the Korean War, stationed inside the United States. When he came home he went back to school, earning a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri and a master's from Duke. For more than three decades he worked in research and development for Western Electric and Bell Laboratories, helping design the systems that quietly keep communication lines running.
Writing threaded through those years in small, stubborn ways. He traded playful short stories back and forth with his father and later wrote for dirt bike magazines, filing how to pieces and race reports on the side. None of it looked like a new career yet, but it kept his storytelling muscles in shape.
Everything changed after a motorcycle accident in 1977 left him flat on his back for months.
While he was recovering, McKiernan picked up a pencil and began drafting what he first imagined as a sequel to The Lord of the Rings. When it became clear that an official continuation of Tolkien was not going to happen, he reimagined the story in a new world of his own making. That world became Mithgar, and the rewritten tale grew into The Iron Tower trilogy, starting with The Dark Tide. Those books introduced readers to Warrows, Elves, Dwarves, and the long struggle against the dark mage Modru, and they gave him enough momentum to keep going once he left engineering.
Over the next decades he fleshed out Mithgar's history in stand alone epics and linked sagas. Novels such as Dragondoom, The Dragonstone, Silver Wolf, Black Falcon, City of Jade, and Stolen Crown explore different eras of the world, from dragon cursed hoards to sea voyages and civil wars over a stolen throne. Story collections like Tales of Mithgar and Red Slippers slip into taverns and byroads to tell smaller, more intimate adventures.
He clearly enjoys watching long histories pile up behind a simple campfire tale.
McKiernan also has a softer, fairy tale side. His Once Upon books, beginning with Once Upon a Winter's Night and running through Once Upon a Summer Day, Once Upon an Autumn Eve, Once Upon a Spring Morn, and Once Upon a Dreadful Time, take classic tales and stretch them into full length fantasies. Set in the borderlands between our world and Faery, they follow princes, princesses, and ordinary mortals through quests that mix romance, riddles, and battles with witches, trolls, and the Fates themselves.
Not all of his work is set in secondary worlds. In the Black Foxes novels, built from Caverns of Socrates and its later e book incarnation Shadowtrap along with its sequel Shadowprey, he sends a team of expert gamers into a dangerously immersive virtual reality ruled by a powerful artificial intelligence. His thriller At the Edge of the Forest moves into contemporary suspense, following a writer who returns to a family estate beside a dark wood and finds her sister missing. The collection Strange Reflections gathers short pieces he originally published in a variety of anthologies and magazines.
Certain threads run through nearly all of these stories. McKiernan likes fellowships more than lone heroes, and he often gives the crucial tasks to the small and underestimated rather than the obvious champions. His engineering background shows up in the way his worlds fit together; maps, calendars, and mythologies tend to line up cleanly behind the scenes. He is open about Tolkien's influence, but he also draws on old fairy books, folk tales, and the kind of campfire yarns that sound as if they might be true.
Today he lives in Arizona with his wife, Martha Lee, still riding motorcycles and scuba diving when he can, and still returning to the page to see where Mithgar, Faery, or some new path through the woods might lead next.
