Into the Forge
by Dennis L McKiernan
1997
When two young Warrows from the village of Twoforks try to help a dying soldier, they inherit a copper coin and a warning meant for the High King. Their attempt to carry that message east forces Tip and Beau through haunted forests, frozen passes, and the opening battles of a vast war.
Series background & context
The Hel's Crucible duology, made up of Into the Forge and Into the Fire, takes place during one of Mithgar's most sweeping wars. Rather than following kings or wizards from the start, Dennis L McKiernan anchors the story in two young Warrows, Tip and Beau, small folk from the village of Twoforks who suddenly find the wider world crashed into their quiet lives.
When Tip and Beau try to help a mortally wounded messenger, the dying man presses a simple copper coin into their hands along with a warning meant for the High King. Carrying that message east toward the city of Agron seems, at first, like an errand well beyond their skills. As they leave home they pass through places that have only ever been names in old tales: the ominous Drearwood, remote mountain passes, Elven strongholds hidden from ordinary travelers.
The deeper they go, the clearer the scale of the danger becomes. Modru of Gron, the dark mage who once threatened Mithgar in The Iron Tower, has launched a new, wider war, and this time the conflict stretches into other planes of existence. Along the way Tip and Beau gather a makeshift fellowship of Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Silver Wolves with their warrior maidens, each group bringing its own history and grudges to the fight.
Into the Forge follows the journey as the company is forged, narrowed, and tested, and as it brushes against battles that are already scorching the countryside. Into the Fire widens the lens to full war. Armies clash at the grim fortress of Grimwall, magic rends the sky, and the powers behind Modru make their play. The Warrows and their friends find themselves in positions where small choices have consequences far beyond anything they expected when they first took up the coin.
Although the Hel's Crucible books stand alone, they resonate strongly with other Mithgar stories, especially The Iron Tower and later works that deal with Gyphon's cults and long buried prophecies. Readers can expect extended travel sequences, hard fought battles, and a focus on how ordinary people try to hold onto decency and friendship when the world seems determined to burn.
