Tales from the One-Eyed Crow

by Dennis L McKiernan

1991

In this graphic novel set in Mithgar, a female Warrow named Petal is kidnapped by Baron Stoke, a ruthless shapechanger and master of the wolf like Vulgs. As an old storyteller recounts the tale in the inn called the One Eyed Crow, Petal's friends undertake a desperate rescue against a near immortal foe.

Series background & context

Under the Mithgar Graphic Novels banner sits a single, distinctive work: Tales from the One-Eyed Crow: The Vulgmaster. Instead of a prose novel, this is a fully illustrated story that brings McKiernan's world to life in panels and speech balloons, adding a visual layer to a setting readers may already know from the novels.

The tale is framed, like many Mithgar short pieces, by an evening in an inn. A group of Warrows is snowed in at the One Eyed Crow, a small tavern in the Boskydells known for good company and better stories. As the blizzard howls outside, an elder begins to spin a yarn for the younger listeners, and his words become the images on the page.

At the heart of that story is Petal, a brave female Warrow who is kidnapped by Baron Stoke. He is a cruel shapechanger and the master of the wolf like Vulgs, creatures already feared in Mithgar's legends. Determined not to abandon their friend, three other Warrows set out to track her captor into dangerous territory, facing Foul Folk, sorcery, and the Baron himself in an attempt to win her back.

Because it is a graphic novel, The Vulgmaster shows readers things that are only described elsewhere: the look of Warrow villages, the hulking forms of Vulgs, the narrow streets and heavy beams of the One Eyed Crow. The art leans into both the charm and the menace of Mithgar, balancing cozy hearths with nightmare creatures.

Newcomers can read this volume on its own as a self contained rescue adventure. Longtime fans will spot references to events and places from the novels, and may enjoy seeing one of the world's many tavern tales given a more cinematic treatment without losing the feeling of a story told to pass a stormy night.
