Author bio

Delia Parr is the pen name of Mary Lechleidner, a writer whose historical romances often make room for ordinary people facing very big changes. Born in Camden, New Jersey, on February 28, 1947, she was raised in nearby Pennsauken. Those South Jersey roots stayed close to her work, especially in the attention she gives to town life, family ties, and the ways neighbors can know far more about one another than they admit.

She attended Pennsauken High School and later returned to education at Rutgers University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1986 and a master's degree in American history in 1989. She went on to teach social studies at the high-school level in southern New Jersey. History was not just a school subject for her. It gave her a working feel for how people lived, worked, worried, and made do in earlier American communities.

Before writing as Delia Parr, she published historical romance under her own name. Her first novel, Evergreen, arrived in 1995, followed by books including The Fire in Autumn, By Fate's Design, The Ivory Duchess, and Sunrise. These early stories put women in restrictive circumstances, then let them work through danger, family pressure, secrets, and complicated love.

The women do not sit around waiting to be rescued.

Her later work shifted toward inspirational historical fiction, with faith present as part of daily life rather than as a separate lesson. The At Home in Trinity novels center on Martha Cade, a Pennsylvania midwife whose work carries her into the private struggles of her neighbors. In the Candlewood books, Emma Garrett runs a boardinghouse in an Erie Canal village, where every guest seems to arrive with baggage, literal or otherwise.

Parr also wrote the Hearts Along the River novels, including Hearts Awakening, Love's First Bloom, and Hidden Affections. Those books lean into secrets, social rules, and slow-building relationships in nineteenth-century Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Her Home Ties trilogy takes a different route, moving into contemporary family drama and following women dealing with illness, grief, caregiving, and strained relationships.

Community is the real through line.

Her characters are often midwives, mothers, widows, caretakers, teachers, and women trying to claim some say over their own futures. The stakes can be personal, but they are rarely small. A threatened home, a damaged reputation, a child who needs protection, or an old hurt within a family can change everything.

Parr has received awards including the Laurel Wreath Award for Historical Romance and the Aspen Gold Award for Best Inspirational Book. She is the mother of three grown children. After many years teaching in New Jersey, she retired to Florida's Gulf Coast, where she has continued writing and volunteering.

That background shows in the books. There is research in the period detail, but the heart of a Delia Parr story is usually a person trying to build a safe, honest life with the people around them.
