Defining Destiny Books in Order

Defining Destiny is a different corner of Deanna Chase's work. The magical elements are lighter, and the emotional focus is more contemporary romance than full paranormal fantasy. The books are set around Mendocino, California, and they lean into music, art, grief, and the idea that love is not always simple, even in a world where soul mates exist.

That soul-mate idea is the engine of the series, but Chase does not treat it like a shortcut. Instead, she uses it to complicate everything. What if the person you thought was meant for you betrays you? What if fate keeps pointing one way while your actual feelings move somewhere else? That tension gives the series its identity.

The characters are younger than in some of her later small-town witch books, and the emotional stakes feel a little rawer. Careers are still being built. Families still have too much say.
