Author bio
Debora Geary is an American writer best known for building warm, interconnected worlds where magic slips easily into everyday life. Under her own name she created the Modern Witch universe, a cluster of contemporary fantasy series that follow witches who text, code, bake cookies and raise kids while trying to use their gifts well.
She began publishing as an indie author in 2011 with A Modern Witch, a novel that asks what happens when a driven Chicago realtor discovers, almost by accident, that she belongs to a global community of witches. That book quickly grew into a full series, introducing readers to Witches Chat, a magical version of an online message board, and to Witch Central, a tight-knit clan centered in Berkeley that treats found family as serious business.
Across the Modern Witch novels and short pieces, Geary keeps the stakes close to home. Her witches worry more about parenting, burnout and doing the right thing with their power than about apocalyptic battles. A spell might be written as clean, elegant code, and the fallout from misused magic is just as likely to show up as hurt feelings as it is as storm clouds. The tone stays light on its feet even when the characters are wrestling with grief, infertility or old trauma.
Two closely linked spin-offs, the WitchLight Trilogy and the Witch Central series, widen that circle. The WitchLight books follow Jenvieve “Jennie” Adams as she mentors witches who have lost their way, including a tightly wound psychologist and a former juvenile delinquent with a gift for words. Witch Central steps in later, focusing on grown-up questions of marriage, adoption, aging and what it means to lead a magical community over time.
Geary has always written as someone juggling stories with the rest of life. Early author notes joke about new books arriving “if the kids don’t spill any more water on my laptop,” and that mix of domestic chaos and creativity runs right through her fiction. Readers who return to the Modern Witch universe often describe the books as comfort reads: gentle, funny, and full of people who show up for one another.
After several years in the witch world, she shifted gears and adopted the pen name Audrey Faye. Under that name she writes hopeful, character-driven stories in other corners of speculative fiction, from the interstellar Fixers of the KarmaCorp novels to the cozy shifter healing of the Ghost Mountain Wolf Shifters series, to all-ages dragon adventures in Dragon Kin and small-town contemporaries like For The Love of Purple.
She has also written more personal work, including Sleeping Solo: One Woman’s Journey Into Life After Marriage, and has spoken candidly in author notes and newsletters about taking breaks from publishing when life demanded it. Through all the changes in genre, name and format, one thread stays constant: her stories circle back, again and again, to resilience, belonging and the quiet magic of people choosing to take care of each other.
