Death Knight Books in Order

Death Knight opens with one of Michael Chatfield's friendlier fantasy hooks. Anthony wakes up from what should have been a very long nap and discovers that he is now a death knight. That would be bad enough on its own, but his memories don't line up cleanly with the world around him, and the person who wakes him is Aila Wranoris, a dark elf princess with her own problems to handle.

From there, the series settles into a nice balance of humor, questing, and real stakes. Anthony is undead, but he is not a grim antihero. He is awkward, loyal, confused, and deeply committed to helping people even when he barely understands what is going on. Aila gives the series its steadying force, while characters like Tommie, Claire, and Damien help widen both the cast and the emotional range as the books move forward.

Dena is the heart of it.

This is a world split by old wounds. Humans and beast kin are pulling toward war, old alliances have decayed, and the Guardians are more a memory than a living force when Skeleton with a Heart begins. That gives the series its ongoing tension. Anthony and his friends are not just wandering from one fight to the next. They are trying to recover history, understand what was lost, and figure out whether people who have been divided for generations can be pulled back from the edge.

The tone stays lighter than some of Chatfield's other work, but the stakes are still real. There are jokes, running bits, and a lot of warmth in the group dynamic, yet the story never forgets that Dena is heading toward bloodshed. That tension becomes more important in books like A Skeleton's Duty and A Lich's Love, where peace starts to look harder, more costly, and more worth fighting for.

One of the best things about the series is that it likes goodness without making it feel soft. Anthony is powerful, but what matters more is the kind of person he tries to be. The books keep coming back to duty, friendship, and choosing mercy without pretending those choices are easy.

This is a fantasy series with undead, magic, and plenty of action.

It is also a story about rebuilding trust in a broken place, and about a strange, lovable group of people trying to become the kind of Guardians Dena actually needs.
