Series background & context

DCI Kate Daniels is at the heart of Mari Hannah's longest running crime series, a set of police procedurals rooted in Newcastle and the wider Northumberland landscape. The books combine detailed investigative work with a strong sense of place and character.

Kate is a Detective Chief Inspector with Northumbria Police. She is driven, sometimes stubborn and deeply committed to the families of victims. As an out gay woman in a male dominated force she often has to fight for her space, balancing the politics of the job with the demands of major crime investigations.

The series opens with The Murder Wall, where Kate is still haunted by an unsolved double murder when a new killing on the Newcastle quayside drags her personal life into the case. In Settled Blood she is called to a body at the foot of Hadrian's Wall and drawn into a kidnap case that tests how far she will go to save a stranger. Deadly Deceit throws her into the aftermath of a catastrophic road crash and a suspicious house fire, where not every death is an accident.

In Monument to Murder (also published as Fatal Games), skeletal remains found beneath an ancient coastal castle lead to a chilling connection with a manipulative sex offender and the prison psychologist he has fixated on. Killing for Keeps follows a vicious feud inside a crime family after two brothers die hours apart in separate, brutal attacks, pushing Kate into cross border territory and some very dangerous company.

Gallows Drop shifts the focus to a remote village where a teenage wrestler is found hanging from historic gallows the morning after a country show. Kate has seen the victim alive only hours before and finds herself battling both an old rival in the force and the secrets of a tight knit rural community. The later novels raise the stakes even further: Without a Trace begins with a transatlantic plane that vanishes from the sky, taking the woman Kate loves with it, while Her Last Request centres on a dying victim who leaves Kate a note asking her to find someone called Aaron.

In The Longest Goodbye she must revisit the still unresolved murder of a fellow police officer after suspects from that case are shot soon after returning to the country. It is a story that forces her to question past decisions and risk the safety of her team to get the right result.

Taken together, the Kate Daniels novels chart a career and a life, not just a series of puzzles. Readers see friendships deepen, relationships strain and heal, and the North East itself change over time. Each book can be read on its own, but following the series in order lets you watch Kate grow, make mistakes and keep coming back to the work that defines her.
