Senior Sleuths Mystery Books in Order

The Senior Sleuths Mystery books take two familiar supporting characters from the Melanie Travis world and give them center stage. Peg Turnbull and Rose Donovan are sisters-in-law who have spent years irritating each other, judging each other's choices, and somehow staying part of the same extended family anyway. In Peg and Rose Solve a Murder, Laurien Berenson turns that tension into the engine of a new series. The result is part cozy mystery, part reluctant buddy story, and a lot of fun.

Peg and Rose are opposites, and Berenson does not soften that. Peg is tough, impatient, and wonderfully blunt. Rose, a former nun, is gentler, more hopeful about people, and usually more diplomatic. Each woman sees the other's flaws very clearly. That means the crimes matter, but so does the question of whether these two can spend time together without snapping at each other. Their slow, grudging teamwork is really the heart of the series.

The mysteries themselves drop them into social worlds where secrets pile up behind respectable surfaces. A bridge club in the first book, an online dating disaster in the second, and a Kentucky trip that mixes dog shows with Thoroughbred business in the third all give Peg and Rose plenty to untangle. Berenson uses those settings well. They feel cozy and familiar on the outside, then open up into gossip, old resentments, money problems, and the kind of bad decisions that can turn deadly.

Readers coming from the Melanie Travis books will recognize Peg immediately, but this series is not just a side trip. Rose becomes much more than the pleasant foil she may have seemed before, and Peg gets room to be sharp-tongued, vulnerable, and unexpectedly funny all at once. Their age matters too, in a good way. Berenson writes them as active women with long memories, firm opinions, and lives that did not stop being interesting just because they got older.

The tone stays cozy, but it has its own rhythm. The Senior Sleuths books are less about juggling kids and more about late-life reinvention, family baggage, and second chances. There is still plenty of dog-world detail around Peg, and in Peg and Rose Play the Ponies the story also leans into Kentucky horse country. That wider canvas gives the series a slightly different feel from Melanie's books, even though the family connection remains strong.

If you like mysteries built on personality, this series delivers. The crimes are solid, but the real pleasure is watching two stubborn women learn, very slowly, how to trust each other. They bicker, misread situations, and push each other's buttons, then show up when it counts. That mix of humor, affection, and murder-solving is what makes the Senior Sleuths books feel inviting from the first page.
