David Wilson Books in Order

David Wilson grew up in the Ozarks, where time with his grandfather meant learning practical outdoor skills, including fishing, hunting, and trapping. Those early lessons stayed with him. They also help explain why preparedness, equipment, and the hard choices people make under pressure show up so often in his fiction.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at seventeen. Wilson began as an infantry mortarman, later moved into counterintelligence after becoming a sergeant, and served for more than two decades. He retired in 1998 as a chief warrant officer, then went on to work with government agencies and as a contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That is a lot of real-world experience to carry into a story.

Wilson began publishing fiction in 2019 with First Steps, the opening novel in his Lone Star Odyssey series. The book introduces Talon Clark, a former Marine and contractor stranded in Washington, D.C., when attacks on American infrastructure bring down the power grid. Talon's simple goal, getting back to his wife and children on their Texas ranch, becomes a long and dangerous trip through a country coming apart.

The series continues in Obstacles, Choices, Decisions, and Consequences. These are linked books, not stand-alone adventures, and they follow Talon's journey as shortages, violence, shifting alliances, and the loss of normal civil order make every mile home harder. Wilson keeps the focus on movement, problem-solving, and the responsibilities Talon takes on when other people need help.

The practical details are part of the point. His books spend time with gear, travel plans, weapons, supplies, and the routines that can matter when systems fail. Readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction with a military and survival angle will find that knowledge woven directly into the action.

His later novel A Fair Test opens a separate series, The Broken Chronicles. Its main character, Lance, is a Marine veteran coping with severe injuries, survivor guilt, PTSD, addiction, and loss after his service in Afghanistan. When a larger catastrophe begins, Lance is forced to look beyond his own isolation when a group of young Scouts lands in his care.

Wilson's protagonists are usually trained people who would rather be left alone, until circumstances make that impossible. Family, loyalty, resilience, and the price of stepping in for others are recurring concerns. The stakes can be large, but the immediate question is often basic: Who needs help, what supplies are left, and how do you make it through the next day?

In author information attached to his books, Wilson describes life in Texas with his wife, children, horses, and dogs, along with the constant repair work that comes with a ranch. He has also said that he writes around his contracting work. It fits the straightforward, hands-on feel of the novels.
