Carter Wilson Books in Order

Carter Wilson was born in New Mexico and grew up in Los Angeles, a move between places that may help explain why so many of his stories pull familiar people into unfamiliar territory. He later studied at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, before eventually making his home in Colorado.

Writing was not originally the plan. In 2003, while working as a consultant in the hospitality business, he took a continuing-education class and tried a creative exercise to relieve the boredom. The exercise grew into a 400-page manuscript, a surprisingly large result from a small decision, and he kept writing.

Since then, Wilson has built a shelf of standalone psychological thrillers. His setups often begin with a person trying to manage an ordinary role, a parent, spouse, writer, traveler, or neighbor, then put that person under pressure until old secrets and bad choices demand attention.

Nobody gets an easy exit in a Carter Wilson novel.

His debut, Final Crossing, follows a disturbed killer whose mission crosses continents, while The Boy in the Woods brings an adult thriller writer face-to-face with a terrifying secret from adolescence. In The Comfort of Black, a woman discovers that the husband she thought she knew may be dangerous. These are fast-moving books, but they are also interested in what fear does to a family and how much a person can trust their own read of events.

Memory is a recurring concern in Wilson's work. His father developed early-onset Alzheimer's disease and died at 69, an experience Wilson has said stayed with him. That personal fear of forgetting, or of not knowing whether a memory is true, runs especially strongly through The Dead Girl in 2A, where two strangers discover an unsettling connection after meeting on a plane.

Later books keep changing the frame without leaving psychological suspense behind. Mister Tender's Girl follows a woman stalked by the fictional monster invented by her father. The Dead Husband sends a newly widowed novelist and her son back to the family home she fled. In Tell Me What You Did, a true-crime podcaster confronts a caller who claims to know the truth about her past.

The crimes matter, but the emotional fallout matters just as much.

Wilson's books have received awards including Colorado Book Awards, and his work has been optioned for film and television. Beyond novels, he has published short fiction and is the host of Making It Up, a podcast where he talks candidly with other writers about the working life behind the books.

He also founded Unbound Writer, through which he offers coaching, retreats, and workshops for writers. Wilson lives in Erie, Colorado, and travels often for teaching and speaking. He still seems drawn to the same question that began with that classroom exercise: what happens when a single idea refuses to leave you alone?
