Author bio
David Blake is a full-time crime and comic fiction author based in North London, best known for his DI Tanner mysteries set on the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads and for selling well over a million copies worldwide.
He did not begin on the Broads, though. His first books followed Inspector Capstan through a series of gleefully over-the-top cases like The Slaughtered Virgin of Zenopolis and The Curious Case of Cut-Throat Cate, where straight-faced police work collides with absurd criminals and even stranger plots.
From there he pushed Capstan into space. The Space Police novels drop the baffled detective and his sidekick Dewbush into the twenty-fifth century, where an all-powerful President runs Earth, time travel can be built out of kitchen appliances, and even a missing cow can lead to interplanetary trouble.
Blake’s love of humour also spills into Galaxy Squad: Danger from Drackonia, which follows a bunch of panicking interns who accidentally kill their elite heroes, then have to fake being them on a mission that was never meant for amateurs. It is the same universe as Space Police, just with a fresh set of idiots in charge.
Alongside the sci fi he writes rom com. In Prime Time Love and Headline Love he turns his eye on a chaotic British newsroom, where TV reporter Abigail Love and her cameraman, Will Wankett, try to juggle dating, viral news and the embarrassing secrets they share from school.
The move into crime fiction proper came with Broadland in 2019, the novel that introduced DI John Tanner and DC Jenny Evans, and rooted Blake’s work in the reed beds, rivers and boatyards of the Norfolk Broads. Bodies turn up in propeller churned water, ruined abbeys and marshy woods, and the landscape itself always feels complicit.
Across the growing Tanner series, through books like Horsey Mere, The Wherryman, Storm Force, Long Gore Hall, Weavers' Way, Bluebell Wood and Blackfleet Broad, Tanner rises through the ranks while his relationship with Jenny deepens into marriage and family. The cases stay self contained, but the emotional threads and quiet jokes reward reading in order.
The Broads are Blake’s favourite subject for good reason. He has spent years holidaying on those waters, and when he is not writing he still likes nothing better than mucking about in boats, soaking up the mix of big skies, slow rivers and lurking fog that later turn up in his novels.
Today he writes full-time, splitting his days between drafting new Tanner novels like The Bastwick Testament and forthcoming titles such as The Watch House, and meeting readers at festivals, library events and online book clubs. The tone is always the same, whether he is sending a detective into a gale on Barton Broad or stranding a hapless cop on a moon of Jupiter, brisk stories with a dark edge, sharp dialogue and just enough humour to keep things human.
