Headline Love

by David Blake

2017

Now working in London on a scrappy YouTube news channel, Abigail and Will are juggling a fragile relationship with the pressure to deliver viral stories. When ratings crash and a larger than life figure called McDongle storms into their lives, Abigail has to decide how far she will go for love and headlines.

Series background & context

The Abigail Love books shift Blake’s eye from murder and space mayhem to the mess of modern dating and media. Abigail is a sharp tongued TV news reporter who discovers that her new cameraman, the quietly awkward Will Wankett, is the same boy she once tormented at school.

In Prime Time Love the pair are thrown together on a local news show, trading jokes and barbs on air without realising who the other really is. As their chemistry builds, so does the unease, until the truth about their shared past threatens both their relationship and their careers.

Headline Love moves them to London and into the world of a scrappy YouTube news channel, Prime Time Today. Here Abigail is battling flat viewing figures, clickbait pressure and an outrageous new figure, McDongle, who might save the channel or blow everything up, just as she is trying to decide if Will is someone she can build a life with.

The tone is very much British rom com: plenty of swearing, fast dialogue, and a willingness to poke fun at reality TV, online outrage and the way news stories are packaged. Long time readers will spot cameos from characters in the Inspector Capstan and Space Police books, tying Abigail’s world into the larger comic universe Blake has built.

On this page you can see the Abigail Love books in order, read short descriptions and decide whether to start at the beginning or jump straight into Headline Love if you enjoy workplace romances where everything, from careers to hair extensions, feels a bit precarious.

Whichever you choose, expect big jokes, bad decisions and a surprisingly sweet core under all the sarcasm.
