Danger from Drackonia

by David Blake

2018

In the twenty sixth century, Earth’s elite Galaxy Squad are accidentally poisoned by their own interns. Desperate to hide what they have done, the rookies steal their heroes’ identities and set out to retrieve Voyager Two, only to run straight into Drackonian trouble.

Series background & context

Galaxy Squad is Blake’s spin on the classic space opera team, only here the universe’s bravest officers do not stay alive for very long. Set in the twenty sixth century, the series opens with Earth’s President picking fights across the solar system while Galaxy Squad supposedly holds the line.

In Galaxy Squad: Danger from Drackonia that heroic image collapses in the first chapter when a group of nervous interns accidentally poison the entire squad. In a panic, they decide to impersonate their dead idols, hoping that if they can bluff their way through one routine assignment nobody will ever know.

Their easy job is to fetch Voyager Two and its golden record before it falls into the wrong hands. Instead, the fake heroes keep making things worse, ping ponging between dangerous aliens, bureaucratic bosses and the looming threat of Drackonian enemies who are far above their pay grade. The humour comes from the gap between their swaggering cover story and the chaos they actually cause.

The book shares a universe, and a few sly references, with the Space Police novels. Fans of Capstan and Dewbush will spot nods to their adventures, but Galaxy Squad focuses on a new cast, so you can read it as a standalone even if you have never met the Space Police before.

This page gives you the basic setup, explains the running jokes and links, and keeps track of any future entries, so you can decide whether to treat Danger from Drackonia as a one off romp or the start of another ridiculous saga.

Either way, expect fast talk, bad decisions and a lot of things exploding that probably should have been left alone.
