At the center of the David and Grace series are Grace, a young theatre director with a practical streak, and David, a wealthy, secretive man whose private appetites shape the whole story. Guests arrive with their own motives, old insecurities flare up, and David's attention does not always stay where Grace wants it. Even in the more glamorous scenes, the emotional stakes stay close to the surface.

The tone is erotic romance with a strong streak of possessiveness, secrecy, and class fantasy. David moves through a polished, expensive world that Grace did not come from, and part of the fun is watching her refuse to stay overawed by it. She is not passive, even when she is uncertain.
