Start with If Angels Burn and you can see exactly what Lynn Viehl is building here, a dark paranormal romance series with a big hidden-history engine under it. The first book brings surgeon Alexandra Keller into the orbit of Michael Cyprien, a wealthy recluse who needs impossible medical help. From there the books open into a secret world of immortals, old loyalties, and enemies who have been hunting each other for centuries.

The Darkyn, often called the Kyn inside the books, are not glamorous loners drifting above human life. They are organized, territorial, and deeply political. They keep households, claim domains, protect their own people, and carry scars from a much older past. On the other side are the Brethren, religious zealots who see them as monsters to be captured, controlled, or destroyed. That long war gives the series its pressure, and it means the romance in each book is always tangled up with survival.

Each novel shifts the spotlight to a new couple, which keeps the emotional center fresh while the larger conflict keeps moving. Private Demon follows Jema Shaw and Thierry Durand. Dark Need pairs homicide detective Samantha Brown with Lucan, a nightclub owner tied to her case in more ways than she understands. Night Lost brings in thief Nicola Jefferson and the tormented Gabriel Seran. Evermore turns to Jayr and Byrne, and Twilight Fall and Stay the Night widen the world again through older grief, dangerous missions, and thieves with very long memories.

This is a romance series, but it is also a conspiracy series.

A big part of the appeal is the mood. The books like candlelit rooms, underground chambers, ruined churches, hidden strongholds, and cities where modern life sits right on top of ancient violence. New Orleans matters in the opening book, but the series does not stay in one place for long. It moves through American cities, old estates, and European shadows, always with the sense that history is close by and usually angry.

The novellas fit that larger pattern, too. Master of Shadows digs into the world around Robin of Locksley and Will Scarlet, showing how much loyalty can cost when love and duty pull in opposite directions. Even when a book focuses on one pair, the series never forgets the wider network of lords, servants, allies, prisoners, and rivals who make this hidden society feel lived in.

Read in order if you can. The individual romances land on their own, but the power struggles, betrayals, and shifting alliances hit harder when you watch them build book by book.
