The Youngbloods Books in Order

The Youngbloods takes some of the shadowy atmosphere Lynn Viehl used in her adult paranormal fiction and brings it into a young adult setting. The series follows Catlyn Youngblood, a teenager who has spent years moving from place to place with her older brothers, Trick and Gray. When they finally settle on a farm near Lost Lake, Florida, the promise of a normal life is there for about five minutes before the town starts showing its teeth.

The first book, After Midnight, sets up the series through mood as much as plot. Cat is lonely, restless, and already used to living with secrets she does not fully understand. Then she meets Jesse Raven, the strange boy she keeps seeing on midnight rides. Their connection is immediate, but so is the warning that they should stay far away from each other. Viehl uses that setup well. The romance is tender and intense in a very teenage way, but it is surrounded by family history, old grudges, and the feeling that Lost Lake has been keeping a supernatural argument going for a long time.

Horses matter here, and that helps the books feel grounded. So does Florida. Lost Lake is fictional, but the setting has the humid, half-isolated feel of a small town where everybody notices who came to school with whom, who lives out on the edge of town, and who is not behaving the way they should. That everyday texture keeps the series from floating off into pure gothic mood, even when the paranormal pieces start clicking into place.

Cat is easy to root for.

She is curious, stubborn, and brave enough to keep asking questions long after the adults around her clearly wish she would stop. In Dead of Night, the story gets broader without losing that focus. Cat’s relationship with Jesse continues, but the danger shifts. A job cataloging occult books opens the door to older mysteries, and girls who look disturbingly like Cat begin disappearing from town. That gives the second book a stronger investigation thread, while still keeping the emotional center on Cat’s struggle to balance loyalty, love, and the truths her family has hidden from her.

What makes this series work is the mix of first love and inherited trouble. The Youngbloods and the Ravens are not just feuding families standing in the way of a romance. As the books go on, Cat learns that both families are tied to a much older supernatural history, and that her own place in it is not simple. Viehl lets the danger build slowly, which suits the teen perspective. Cat does not get handed a neat explanation. She has to piece it together while still going to school, dealing with town gossip, and trying to figure out who she can trust.

If you want Viehl at her most teen-centered, this is the place to go. Start with After Midnight for the eerie small-town romance, then move to Dead of Night for the deeper mystery. Together they read like a paranormal coming-of-age story, with moonlit rides, family secrets, and just enough dread under the surface to keep every quiet scene interesting.
