Series background & context

The Dark Protector books are connected standalones built around dangerous men, women caught in the crossfire, and a criminal world that never really sleeps. These stories lean into mafia and underworld romance, but they keep the focus close, on obsession, protection, loyalty, and the cost of being tied to men who solve problems with violence.

The first book, Dark Protector, introduces Conrad Mercer, a hitman who has spent years living in darkness and bloodshed. Then he sees Charlie, a florist, and starts orbiting her from a distance. It sounds simple at first, but Aaron uses that setup to build a tense protector story where danger keeps closing in and Conrad has to decide whether staying away is safer than stepping fully into Charlie's life.

Love arrives with a body count.

Nate stays in the same rough world but shifts the emotional angle. Nate once rescued Sabrina from a mafia massacre when she was a girl, then sent her away to keep her safe. Years later, she comes back as an adult, and the old protector dynamic turns into something much more volatile. The push and pull in that book comes from history, guilt, and the fact that wanting someone can be just as dangerous as any enemy.

David rounds out the set with another hard man whose past is not done with him. He has prison time, blood on his hands, and an old connection he cannot shake. When he is assigned to protect the woman he still thinks of as his angel, the series moves into bodyguard territory, but with the same dark edge that runs through the other books. Duty and desire keep crashing into each other.

These men protect badly, but they protect hard.

What links the series is the world around them. Organized crime, hired violence, old codes, and shifting loyalties keep the stakes high in every book. The novels can be read on their own, but together they build a fuller picture of a grim, dangerous circle where tenderness is rare and every connection feels costly.

If you want dark romantic suspense without a lot of waiting around, this series is a good fit. The books are fast, emotional, and openly drawn to antiheroes who are not trying to be good men, only good for one woman.
