Author bio
Celia Aaron came to fiction by way of law. She calls herself a recovering attorney, which tells you a lot about her sense of humor right away. These days she writes romance full time, and her books move easily from dark suspense to fantasy to lighter holiday stories.
She has said that she has always been a writer, just not always a good one. That self-mocking line feels very in character. In the same interview, she pointed to her husband as an important part of the story, the person who encouraged her to keep going and keep getting better until writing became a real career instead of just a private habit.
Her first novel, Counsellor, arrived in 2015 and introduced a lot of what readers now expect from her work: power games, obsession, danger, and attraction tangled together so tightly you can barely separate them. From there she built out the Acquisition books and a growing list of standalones and connected series.
She does not write timid books.
A lot of readers first find her through the darker side of her catalog. Blackwood drops an investigator into the Mississippi Delta and wraps romance around secrets and buried violence. The Bad Guy leans into the mind of a man who knows he is the villain and does not bother pretending otherwise. The Maiden takes that same appetite for danger and pushes it into cult thriller territory.
But staying in one lane does not seem to interest her much. Incubus and Blood Prince bring in myth and paranormal elements. House of Night heads toward gothic vampire fantasy. Then there are books like Kicked, which plays in the world of sports romance, and short holiday stories such as Christmas Cake and Accidental Santa, which show a much lighter, more playful side.
That range is part of what makes her bibliography easy to wander around in. One week you can pick up something brutal and tense. The next week you can read something funny, seasonal, or strangely sweet. Even when the subgenre changes, the core appeal tends to stay the same: bold setups, strong chemistry, and characters who want things badly enough to make a real mess.
She has also been open about the books she loves. In one interview, she named the Harry Potter books, Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, and Sheri S. Tepper's The Gate to Women's Country among her favorites. It is an interesting list, broad, a little dark, and full of books with strong atmosphere.
Quiet houses make good writing rooms.
She has described a writing day that starts with getting children off to school, drinking a lot of coffee, doing some general faffing, and then settling in to work. She also said she does her best writing at night, once the house is quiet. On her official bio, she calls herself an upstart crow and a cat person, and says she writes while romping through life with her family and feisty felines.
That mix, discipline, restlessness, humor, and a willingness to go dark when the story calls for it, runs through her books. Whether she is writing a dangerous antihero, a twisted cult world, or a surprisingly tender holiday novella, she keeps chasing stories with a little bite to them.
