Author bio

Darby Kane is the thriller pen name of HelenKay Dimon, a former divorce lawyer who now writes twisty, character driven stories about secrets, marriages, and violence hiding in plain sight. Under the Darby name she focuses on domestic suspense, including Pretty Little Wife, The Replacement Wife, The Last Invitation, and The Engagement Party.

Before any of that, she grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania's Amish country, in a house where books were everywhere and mysteries and suspense novels were family favorites.

Dimon studied journalism and political science at Syracuse University, then moved to Washington, DC to work on Capitol Hill for her hometown congressman. Law school at Wake Forest came next, followed by a job at a small firm outside DC that specialized in family law. She spent long days navigating divorces and contested custody cases, often seeing people at some of the hardest moments in their lives.

Practicing in the capital meant plenty of high stakes clients, including agents from the Secret Service, FBI, and CIA, and the work fed her fascination with power, secrets, and what people do when they feel cornered. At the same time, the emotional toll of custody battles never really let up. A colleague eventually handed her a stack of romance novels and suggested she needed at least one happy ending, and Dimon was hooked. She started writing her own stories late at night and on weekends, entering an online contest, getting encouragement from an editor, and slowly building the confidence to think of herself as a writer.

For several years she lived a double life, working long weeks as a lawyer while drafting manuscripts whenever she could steal an hour. Her first sales led to more contracts, and in time she left the law to write full time. Under her own name she has published dozens of romantic suspense, contemporary, and erotic romance titles, picked up major awards, and led the Romance Writers of America while continuing to teach and mentor other writers.

Eventually she wanted room for darker stories, the kind where no one guarantees a happily ever after, so she created the Darby Kane persona for her thrillers. Pretty Little Wife introduced readers to that side of her work, blending the precision of a legal mind with the tension of a small town mystery and the question of how far an ordinary woman might go when pushed too far. The book became a number one international bestseller, was featured widely, and was later optioned for television with actor Gabrielle Union attached to star.

More stand alone thrillers followed, each circling questions of trust, memory, and the damage people do inside families. In The Replacement Wife, a woman suspects the charming brother in law everyone loves of leaving a trail of dead and missing partners. Later novels like The Last Invitation, The Engagement Party, What the Wife Knew, The Wife Deserved It, and Such a Clever Girl all take different angles on secret societies, buried crimes, and the fallout that ripples through communities.

Across all of them, she gravitates toward ordinary people forced into impossible choices, tight plotting, and the slow reveal of just how much everyone around you might be hiding.

Outside of writing, Dimon leans into the same interests that show up on the page. She reads widely, watches a steady diet of true crime and British crime dramas, and freely admits to being a dedicated people watcher, always wondering what private history might sit behind a small gesture or offhand comment. A native of Pennsylvania, she now lives in California, where she splits her days between drafting new twists and, when she can, avoiding cold weather.
