Series background & context

The Danny Ryan trilogy is Winslow’s take on the classic gangland saga, recasting old myths about war and exile as late‑twentieth‑century organized crime. Danny starts out as a dockworker and reluctant enforcer for an Irish crew in Providence, Rhode Island, a man who wants a quiet life with his young family but keeps getting pulled deeper into the business.

City on Fire is set in the mid‑1980s, when a small slight at a seaside clambake blows up a fragile peace between the Irish Murphy clan and the Italian Morettis. As grudges turn into bombings and ambushes, Danny is forced to choose between his loyalty to his in‑laws, his sense that the war is doomed, and his responsibility to keep his wife and son alive. The book maps out a city where longshoremen, judges, and mob captains are all tied together by debt and history.

In City of Dreams, the survivors of that war have scattered. Danny ends up on the West Coast with his father and child, trying to launder old money into something legitimate. Hollywood, casinos, and a risky job targeting a Mexican trafficker offer him a shot at reinvention, but also put him back in the path of federal agents and old enemies who have not forgotten Rhode Island.

City in Ruins follows Danny to Las Vegas, where he has climbed into the world of hotels and gaming. On the surface he is a respectable businessman. Underneath, the compromises and lies that got him there are catching up fast, and the final volume forces him to decide what he is willing to sacrifice to protect the people who are left.

The trilogy is rich with references to Greek and Roman epics, but the storytelling stays grounded in barrooms, backrooms, union halls, and desert highways. It is less about clever schemes than about how violence and betrayal echo across families and decades, and about one man’s long, uneven search for a way out.
