The Dawn Patrol

by Don Winslow

2008

Boone Daniels, a surf obsessed ex cop turned private investigator in San Diego, takes a routine insurance case looking for a missing witness. The search leads to a brutal child exploitation ring and a tragedy from his past, forcing him to choose between waves and responsibility.

Series background & context

The Boone Daniels books drop classic private‑eye stories into the middle of San Diego surf culture. Boone is a former cop who now does just enough investigative work to support his real passion: paddling out with the Dawn Patrol, a tight group of friends who meet at first light to chase waves off Pacific Beach.

In The Dawn Patrol, Boone takes on what sounds like routine insurance work, tracking down a missing witness tied to a suspicious warehouse fire. The job pulls him into a child exploitation ring operating along the coast and forces him to reopen an old case that still haunts him. As violence spreads, the bonds inside the Dawn Patrol are tested by secrets, guilt, and Boone’s stubborn loyalty.

The Gentlemen’s Hour finds Boone in even rougher water. A beloved local surf legend is murdered, and a young hothead from a rival crew is arrested. When Boone agrees to help the defense, he risks being branded a traitor by his own community. The investigation takes him through real‑estate scams, shifting alliances among surfers, and the murkier corners of San Diego’s nightlife.

Across the series Winslow uses the easy banter and rituals of surf life to frame serious questions about justice, corruption, and forgiveness. The books are filled with beach bars, board shops, and offshore storms, but underneath the sun‑bleached setting are missing kids, organized crime, and a protagonist who keeps getting dragged away from the water to do the right thing.
