Series background & context

The Danny Pearson series follows a former SAS soldier who never planned to be a hero again. After losing his wife and young son, Danny leaves the regiment and tries to disappear into everyday security work, carrying more guilt and anger than he admits.

That plan does not last long. In the opening timeline of Vodka Over London Ice Danny reconnects with his London family and starts working for his uncle Harry Knight, only to find Harry is a serious player in the city's criminal underworld. When the Russian mafia, led by Viktor and Yuri Volkov, tries to carve off Harry's territory, the feud quickly turns into a full-blown gang war that puts Danny's relatives in the firing line.

From there the books keep pulling Danny from one kind of trouble into the next, often when a simple favour for a friend explodes into something much bigger.

In Execution of Faith and Who Holds The Power he moves from gangland streets into the world of private security and covert government work. Freelance jobs turn into a fight against terrorists and mercenary killers, then into a battle with the Board, a secretive organisation that manipulates events and sends an unrelenting Chinese assassin after Danny and courier Kate Crossman. Threads from those early missions echo through the later novels and short stories, especially around enemies who refuse to stay dead.

Books like Alive Until I Die and No Upper Limit lean into military technology and political stakes. Danny is pushed undercover inside a team of ex-special forces soldiers to uncover stolen prototype weapons, faces a general willing to sacrifice anyone to protect his pet project, and tangles again with an arms dealer known as the Wolf when a journalist's daughter digs up her father's unfinished investigation.

The middle of the series widens the map. Sport of Kings reunites the old SAS unit on the Norfolk coast after a friend disappears, dragging them into an international drug-smuggling ring run out of a country estate. Blood Runs Deep sends Danny to a Moscow prison after Yuri Volkov's daughter hunts down the man who killed her father, while Command to Kill and Leave Nothing to Chance take him to Australia and South America to confront a billionaire who weaponises ordinary people and a cartel boss called El Diablo.

Later instalments like Won't Stay Dead, Till Death Do Us Part and Enemy at the Door show what happens when past villains and new threats collide with Danny's attempts at a normal life. A supposedly dead mercenary comes back with a stolen nuclear device, a stag weekend in Benidorm turns into a search for missing tourists, and a group of privileged, radicalised students launch a terror campaign that brings danger right to Danny's doorstep.

Alongside the main arc, shorter reads such as Snipe, Heavy Traffic, The Timekeepers Box and The Book Signing drop Danny into tight, high-pressure situations, from tracking an escaped killer through London to interrupting human traffickers and rescuing kidnapped comrades. They share the same tone as the novels: straightforward, punchy thrillers built on loyalty, black humour and a hero who tends to meet problems head on.
