The Daniel Pitt series moves Anne Perry's Victorian world into the early twentieth century. Daniel is the son of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt, but he has chosen a different path. In 1910 he is a newly qualified barrister, determined to prove himself in court rather than rely on his famous father's name.

Daniel works in a legal system where a mistake can ruin a life, and where wealth, class, and old connections still shape whose voice is heard. He is bright and compassionate, but he is also young enough to be underestimated by clients, opponents, and senior lawyers. That mix gives the books both courtroom tension and room for Daniel to grow.

Miriam fford Croft is his most important partner. She is a pathologist working in a profession that is still deeply hostile to women. Miriam's medical knowledge and insistence on evidence make her crucial to the investigations, while her own career brings another layer of pressure to the series. Their relationship develops alongside the cases rather than sitting apart from them.

The first novel, Twenty-One Days, gives Daniel only three weeks to save a convicted man from the gallows. Later books involve blackmail, murder, political pressure, and conflicts that reach from courtrooms into hospitals, laboratories, and private homes. The Edwardian setting lets Perry explore a society changing quickly while still clinging to many Victorian assumptions.

The stories are legal mysteries first, but they also care about forensic science, women's professional lives, public reputation, and the ethical burdens of defending someone accused of a terrible crime.
