Charlotte & Thomas Pitt books in chronological order
Series background & context
The Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels are Victorian mysteries built around a marriage of very different backgrounds. Thomas Pitt is a London police officer who earns his place through patient work and moral stubbornness. Charlotte comes from a well-born family, knows the manners of polite society, and sees quickly that respectability can hide plenty of danger.
Their partnership is the heart of the series.
The first book, The Cater Street Hangman, introduces them during a frightening murder investigation in Charlotte's neighborhood. From there, the books follow their courtship, marriage, children, friendships, and changing roles as each new case draws them into another corner of London. Charlotte often finds clues where Thomas cannot go, especially in homes where servants know everything and guests say very little.
Victorian London matters as much as any single suspect. Perry's city includes elegant squares, cramped lodging houses, hospitals, churches, Parliament, police offices, docks, and palace corridors. A murder may pull the Pitts into questions of inheritance, religion, sexual double standards, labor unrest, empire, or government secrecy.
The mysteries grow broader as Thomas's career advances. Early novels focus on local crimes and the social pressures surrounding them. Later books place him in Special Branch, where espionage, terrorism, political manipulation, and threats to the crown make the stakes more public. Charlotte remains a practical investigator in her own right, and recurring friends such as Gracie and Lady Vespasia widen the family circle.
This is not a cozy series, although it has warmth. The crimes can be dark, and the books are interested in who gets believed, who gets protected, and who is left without a voice. Still, the ongoing affection between Charlotte and Thomas gives the stories a steady center.
Reading in order is the best choice. Begin with The Cater Street Hangman, then read Callander Square and Paragon Walk. Each novel offers a complete mystery, but the strongest reward is watching Charlotte and Thomas become partners at home as well as in detection.
